EUGENIO MERINO / INTERVIEW
10 January 2013

Eugenio Merino, an artist whose ironical remarks on the world are disturbing and extremely riveting at the same time.

Describe yourself with 10 words.

I am someone that does whatever he likes.

Describe your work with 10 words

Ironic, critic, funny, dramatic, conceptual, , political, social, serious, disturbing, paradoxical.

Who´s the first artist/photographer that comes to your mind first?

Well , i can´t think of one without thinking of many others. Although i work with materils used in cinema as Ron Mueck or Patricia Piccinii i  like the ideas of Santiago Sierra, Democracia, Chus García Fraile or Jota Castro. I am fan of Duane Hansons works although i prefer Cattelans humor. But the real thing is that i like any art …any artist…. David Shrigley or, Shepard Fairey or anyone else…

Tell us a little bit about yourself, where do you come from and where is your journey going to?

I studied fine arts in Madrid, since then i have been working for some art galleries and i have participated in many exhibitions and art fairs all over the world .

My journey is going nowhere in particular, its only about doing whatever i like each day and trying to make things that have sense and that may contribute to understand  the world we live in.

How would you describe your style?

Well , i have diferent styles when i work with different materials and different ideas. Each concept must be expressed in a style that helps that idea. But what  it is always present in my “style” is humor.

Your house is on fire, what do you save?

My money …no…my family …i don´t know …. My iphone

Something you want the world to know about you?

Not really .I want the world to know more about itself.

What keeps you motivated and inspires you go to on every day?

The motivation comes when you do things in which you believe.

What did you want to be with 13?

I didn´t know why we had to choose an occupation when were at school , I liked the idea of not doing anything. I decided that i wanted to be an artist after begining Economics at the university and finding it was too boring for me …

How have you handled the business side of being an artist?

Never. But i don´t feel art is a business,..at least not for me .

What can we accept from you in 2013, any concrete plans?

I have no concrete plans although i will be participating in european and american art fairs and some group exhibitions in Spain.

italian or chinese?

Japanese.
